Joel is one of the twelve minor prophets represented here on a monumental scale. His book uses a devastating plague and the coming day of the Lord to summon the people to repentance. Michelangelo places him among the witnesses whose words reach beyond their own time.
Joel calls the people to return to God with all their hearts (Joel 2:12–13). He also promises that God will pour out his Spirit on all kinds of people (Joel 2:28–32). Peter quotes this passage at Pentecost to explain the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:16–21).
Joel studies an open scroll held before him. His attentive gaze and steady posture emphasize reading and reflection rather than sudden movement. The figure suggests a prophet absorbed in a message that will be proclaimed to others.
