The Prophet Zechariah

Zechariah served the community that returned from exile and rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. On the Sistine ceiling his figure occupies the end above the entrance, opposite Jonah above the altar. The placement helps frame the ceiling’s larger story of expectation and fulfillment.

Zechariah’s visions encouraged the restored community and looked ahead to God’s reign. Christians connect passages such as Zechariah 9:9, describing a humble king riding a donkey, and 12:10, concerning one who is pierced, with events in Jesus’ life (Matthew 21:4–5; John 19:37).

Zechariah reads from a large book while two youthful figures look on behind him. His solid form and concentrated attention make him a quiet counterpart to Jonah’s dramatic pose at the opposite end of the chapel.
