The Last Judgment
Artist: Michelangelo- Sistine Chapel
between 1537 and 1541
Near the center of the lower portion of The Last Judgment, Michelangelo placed a group of angels sounding long trumpets. Other angels hold books associated with the judgment of humanity. Their position between the rising saved and the descending condemned makes them a central part of the unfolding drama. The trumpets announce the resurrection and the gathering of humanity before Christ. Michelangelo drew upon familiar biblical imagery while transforming it into a dramatic assembly of powerful figures.
The sounding of trumpets is closely associated with the resurrection and the return of Christ. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:52 that the dead would be raised at the last trumpet. In 1 Thessalonians 4:16, the coming of the Lord is accompanied by the trumpet of God. Revelation also describes heavenly trumpets and books opened at the final judgment. Michelangelo brings these images together to emphasize that the judgment concerns all humanity. The angels announce the moment when the dead are raised and every person must answer before God.
Michelangelo arranged the trumpet-bearing angels in a compact group filled with energetic movement. Their powerful bodies bend and twist as they raise the long instruments to their mouths. The trumpets extend outward in different directions, creating strong diagonal lines that animate the composition. Nearby figures hold large books, introducing a contrasting sense of solemn authority. Positioned beneath Christ, the angels connect the heavenly judgment above with the resurrection and separation of humanity below.
