SONG OF SONGS
Scripture - Old Testament
The Song of Songs is a poetic book celebrating love and marriage. It has traditionally been read both as a beautiful expression of human love and, by many Jewish and Christian interpreters, as suggestive of the love between God and His people or Christ and His church.

Scripture records songs of praise, victory, prayer, prophecy, and thanksgiving from Moses, Deborah, David, Hannah, Mary, angels, and others. These songs express God’s mighty works and the worship of his people.
SONS OF GOD
Angels & Spiritual Beings - Both
“Sons of God” chiefly refers in Job and the Psalms to heavenly beings or angels who stand before God and serve Him. In Genesis 6:2,4 the expression is debated, with interpretations referring either to human groups or to supernatural beings.
SONS OF GOD (NEW TESTAMENT)
Salvation - New Testament
In the New Testament, believers become sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, by spiritual birth and adoption. This sonship brings God’s love, care, discipline, inheritance, and a family likeness, and will be fully revealed at Christ’s coming.
Soothsayer
Sin & Judgment - Both
A soothsayer is one who claims to predict future events through divination, astrology, omens, or related practices. Scripture condemns such practices as false and contrary to trusting God.
Sop
Agriculture & Daily Life - New Testament
A sop was a piece of bread dipped into a common dish. Jesus gave such a morsel to Judas at the Last Supper.
Sopater
People & Groups - New Testament
Sopater was a Christian from Berea who accompanied Paul on his journey toward Asia. He is probably the same person as Sosipater, Paul’s kinsman mentioned in Romans.
Sophereth
People & Groups - Old Testament
Sophereth, or Hassophereth, was a family among the descendants of Solomon’s servants who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel.
Sorcerer
Sin & Judgment - Both
A sorcerer is one who claims power through magical or occult practices. Scripture treats sorcery as sinful and warns that those who persist in it face divine judgment.
SORE
Agriculture & Daily Life - Both
A sore is a painful or diseased wound or ulcer. In Scripture, the term may describe bodily affliction, including leprous plagues, festering wounds, Lazarus’s ulcers, and the grievous sores associated with divine judgment.
Sorek
Places & Geography - Old Testament
The valley of Sorek was a fertile valley west of Judah, traditionally identified with Wady Surar. Delilah lived there, and Samson went to her house.

The Valley of Sorek was a fertile valley in the Shephelah of Judah, associated with vineyards and with Samson’s relationship to Delilah. It lay near Zorah, Beth-shemesh, and Timnah.
SORREL
Objects & Symbols - Old Testament
Sorrel is a color term used in Zechariah’s vision for a reddish or speckled horse. The Revised Version renders the term “sorrel.”
SORROW
Doctrine & Theology - Both
Sorrow is grief, distress, or pain of heart. Scripture presents it as a consequence of sin and a means of discipline, while showing that the righteous may suffer sorrow and that God will ultimately remove it from the redeemed.
Sosipater
People & Groups - New Testament
Sosipater was a Jewish Christian and kinsman of Paul who joined in sending greetings to the Roman church. He is probably the same man as Sopater of Berea.
Sosthenes

Sosthenes was a ruler of the synagogue at Corinth who was beaten before Gallio after opposition to Paul. He may be the same believer whom Paul later calls “our brother.”
SOSTRATUS

Sostratus was the governor of the citadel of Jerusalem under Antiochus IV Epiphanes. He was responsible for collecting revenues and was summoned with Menelaus after a dispute over money promised to the king.

SOTTISH
Sin & Judgment - Old Testament
Sottish means stupid, dull, or very foolish. Jeremiah uses the term to describe people who are wise in doing evil but lack understanding of what is good.
SOUL
Doctrine & Theology - Both
The soul in Scripture may mean the living person, life, self, appetite, emotions, or the inner seat of personal identity. It is distinguished from the body and, in important passages, from the spirit, and is spoken of in relation to death, salvation, and eternal destiny.
