Hor means “mountain” and names two places in the biblical records. One was a mountain in the range of Seir or Edom where Aaron died; the other was a landmark on the northern boundary of Palestine.
Israel reached Mount Hor during its wilderness journey after the Edomites refused passage. Aaron died there. The other Hor appears only in the description of Israel’s northern boundary.
The southern Mount Hor is associated with modern Jebel Harun, between the Dead Sea and the Elanitic Gulf, though another proposed identification is Jebel Madurah. The northern Hor may have been a peak of Lebanon.
