About the Artwork

Date

Historical Context

This mosaic decorates the so-called Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, a fifth-century monument renowned for its richly colored mosaics. The scene belongs to the period when Christian patrons commissioned ambitious monumental decoration.

Depiction Analysis

Christ appears as a youthful shepherd seated among sheep, wearing distinguished clothing and holding a cross-shaped staff. The landscape is carefully arranged and the pose is more formal than many earlier catacomb shepherd scenes.

Theological Significance

The familiar Good Shepherd theme expresses Christ's care for his flock and his authority over those who belong to him.

Historical Significance

The work shows a pastoral subject transformed into a splendid monumental image, combining classical naturalism with Christian symbolism.

Influence

Its royal clothing and cross-staff anticipate later images in which pastoral tenderness and sovereign authority appear together.
