Historical Context

The Arian Baptistery in Ravenna was decorated during the reign of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, around AD 500. Its dome mosaic formed part of a building used for Christian baptism.

Depiction Analysis

At the center of the dome, a youthful, beardless Jesus stands in the Jordan as John baptizes him and a dove descends. The personified river appears nearby, while the apostles move around the surrounding circular band.

Theological Significance

The scene connects Jesus' baptism with the rite performed below. Its imagery also reflects the theological and liturgical world of Theodoric's Christian community.

Historical Significance

The mosaic preserves a major late antique baptismal image and illustrates the survival of the youthful Christ type in the early sixth century.

Influence

Its circular arrangement, symbolic river figure, and apostolic procession illuminate the development of Byzantine and medieval baptismal imagery.
