Historical Context

Duccio painted the great Maesta altarpiece for Siena Cathedral in the early fourteenth century. Its reverse included a sequence of scenes from the Passion of Christ, among them the Mocking of Christ. The altarpiece was installed in 1311.

Depiction Analysis

The narrative scene presents Jesus subjected to humiliation before his death. Duccio organizes figures and architecture to make the encounter legible while retaining the elegance of Sienese Gothic painting. The exact detail should be checked against the AVWJ photograph.

Theological Significance

The scene draws attention to the humility and suffering of Jesus, contrasting the abuse he receives with the dignity of his identity.

Historical Significance

Duccio joined Byzantine-influenced devotional form to increasingly sensitive narrative and human interaction, helping transform Italian religious painting.

Influence

His Passion cycle influenced subsequent Sienese artists and contributed to the developing visual language of late medieval Gospel narrative.
