Historical Context

Masaccio painted the Tribute Money in the Brancacci Chapel at Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, during the 1420s. The fresco belongs to a cycle centered on Saint Peter and draws its episode from Matthew 17:24-27.

Depiction Analysis

Jesus stands at the center among the apostles, directing Peter toward the fish that will provide the tax payment. The composition presents several successive actions within one coherent landscape. Consistent light, substantial bodies, and convincing spatial depth make the biblical figures seem present in a real world.

Theological Significance

The scene connects Jesus with divine knowledge and provision, while Peter acts in obedience to his instruction. The payment also speaks to the relation between freedom and public obligation.

Historical Significance

The fresco became a landmark of early Renaissance painting through its spatial construction and strongly modeled figures.

Influence

Its treatment of sacred history influenced generations of painters studying perspective, gesture, and the human figure.
