Leonardo painted the Last Supper on the wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan in the 1490s, completing it around 1498. His experimental technique on dry plaster contributed to the work's later deterioration and complex restoration history.
Jesus sits at the visual center as the apostles react to his announcement that one of them will betray him. The figures form expressive groups, while perspective lines draw the viewer toward Christ. His composure contrasts with the agitation around him.
The scene brings together betrayal, the impending Passion, and the shared meal central to Christian remembrance of Jesus. The arrangement directs attention to Christ as the still center of the drama.
Leonardo transformed the Last Supper into a study of psychological reaction, disciplined perspective, and dramatic unity.
Its composition became one of the most influential and frequently reinterpreted images of Jesus and the apostles.
