Historical Context

Raphael undertook the Transfiguration for Cardinal Giulio de Medici in the final years of his life. The work remained unfinished or partly completed at his death in 1520 and is now in the Vatican Museums.

Depiction Analysis

The upper portion shows the radiant Christ with Moses and Elijah, while Peter, James, and John respond below. In the lower scene, a distressed group surrounds a boy whom the disciples cannot heal. Light and movement unite the two episodes.

Theological Significance

The juxtaposition of glory and human need points to Christ's divine identity and the saving power sought by those who follow him.

Historical Significance

Raphael combined High Renaissance clarity with dramatic contrasts that foreshadowed later artistic developments.
