Historical Context

Caravaggio painted this Flagellation around 1606-1607, near the end of his Roman period. The painting belongs to the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Rouen.

Depiction Analysis

Jesus is shown near a column while his tormentors prepare or carry out the scourging. Strong light reveals the weight of his body and the force of the men's actions. The close composition leaves little distance between the viewer and the suffering Christ.

Theological Significance

The image directs attention to the humiliation and bodily suffering Jesus endured before his crucifixion. Its realism serves contemplation of the Passion.

Historical Significance

The painting is a striking example of Caravaggio's mature dramatic naturalism and his use of illumination to give sacred figures palpable physical presence.

Influence

Caravaggio's treatment of the Passion influenced seventeenth-century artists working in Italy and beyond.
