Artaxerxes IV ruled the Persian Empire, including Egypt, only briefly after the death of Artaxerxes III. His short reign was dominated by instability within the Achaemenid royal court and ended shortly before the accession of Darius III.

Darius III was the final king of the Achaemenid Persian Empire and the last Persian ruler of Egypt before Alexander the Great. His defeats by Alexander destroyed Persian imperial power, and Egypt passed into Macedonian hands in 332 BC.
