Ptolemy IV Philopator inherited a powerful kingdom but faced growing internal and external pressures. He is especially remembered for defeating the Seleucid king Antiochus III at the Battle of Raphia in 217 BC, temporarily preserving Ptolemaic control of the southern Levant.
